So my current plan is to use RT for raw files, do the basic image quality stuff (white balance, chromatic, exposure, noise, sharpen, etc) and then pass it to GIMP for other work like layers. The handshake/link between the 2 is pretty smart and smooth. Thus searched, studied and compared RT and Darktable. Tried nufraw and it did not work with GIMP.
